Gutter Cleaning Cost in NC (2026): What Drives the Price

Technician clearing debris from gutters on a Garner NC home, part of a 2026 gutter cleaning cost guide

Gutter cleaning is the maintenance nobody thinks about until water is sheeting over the front edge during a thunderstorm, or a section pulls away from the fascia under the weight of two years of wet oak leaves. It is also one of the cheapest ways to avoid genuinely expensive problems: fascia rot, foundation water, and in NC specifically, the erosion that happens when concentrated runoff hits red clay.

Here is what gutter cleaning actually costs across North Carolina in 2026, and what the add-ons are worth. These are planning ranges for the NC market rather than quotes.

How Much Does Gutter Cleaning Cost in NC?

Interior gutter cleaning (the cleanout that removes debris) has no single price: it depends on the total linear footage of gutter, the height of the roofline, and how much debris has built up, not on the square footage of the house. Cleanout is priced separately from washing and brightening, typically by gutter specialists, so get a written number for your home. The cosmetic side is different: gutter brightening, which removes the black striping on the face, runs $75 to $200, about $1 to $2 per linear foot of gutter face.

Home typeWhat moves the cleanout priceNotes
Single storyLinear footageLadder work, straightforward access
Two storyHeight and footageThe most common NC home
Three story or steep roofHeight and pitchExtension ladders, fall protection, slower
Large or complex rooflinesComplexityMultiple levels, dormers, valleys
DownspoutsCount and how packed they areOften included, sometimes not

Ask whether downspouts are included. Clearing the troughs while leaving a packed downspout solves nothing, and a clogged downspout is the most common cause of an overflowing gutter. It should be part of the job; on a cheap quote, frequently it is not.

Why NC Homes Need This More Often

Two regional factors make gutter maintenance a bigger deal here than in much of the country.

Loblolly pines. Pine needles are the worst gutter debris there is. They mat together into a dense felt that water cannot pass through, and unlike leaves they shed year-round rather than in one autumn dump. A house with mature pines overhead genuinely needs three to four cleanings a year, not one.

Oak season and spring pollen. Willow oaks and water oaks drop heavily in the fall, and in spring the tassels and that famous yellow pollen wash off the roof and settle in the troughs as a gritty sludge. Spring cleanings in the Triangle often pull out more material than the autumn ones.

The practical consequence: the once-a-year schedule that works elsewhere does not work in most of Wake and Johnston county. Twice a year is the realistic minimum, and heavily treed lots need more.

What gutter brightening actually is

Those vertical black or grey stripes down the face of white gutters are not dirt in the usual sense. They are oxidized aluminum bonded with airborne grime, and pressure washing will not remove them. Brightening uses a specific chemical treatment and hand agitation, which is why it is priced separately from cleaning. It is purely cosmetic, but on a white gutter line it makes a dramatic difference and it is a common add-on when a house is being washed or listed for sale. Our gutter cleaning and brightening page covers the process.

What Changes the Price

Height and roof pitch

The jump from single to two story is the biggest single factor, because it changes the ladder work and the safety requirements. A steep roof compounds it: on anything above about a 7/12 pitch, technicians often cannot walk the roof and must work entirely from ladders, which is slower.

Linear footage and roofline complexity

A simple rectangular ranch is fast. A house with multiple rooflines, dormers, valleys, and a wraparound porch has far more gutter per square foot of house and many more ladder repositions.

How long since the last cleaning

A gutter cleaned six months ago is a quick clear. One that has not been touched in three years may have compacted debris, saplings actually growing in it, and standing water, and companies will often quote a neglect surcharge.

Gutter guards

Counterintuitively, guarded gutters can cost more to clean, because the guards have to be removed and reinstalled. Guards reduce frequency considerably but do not eliminate cleaning, particularly against pine needles, which are fine enough to pass through or mat on top of most guard designs.

Debris disposal

Most companies bag debris and take it. Some leave it bagged on site, and some blow it into the beds, which you may or may not want. Worth confirming.

Access obstacles

Fenced yards, landscaping directly under the gutter line, sunrooms, decks, and conservatories all restrict where a ladder can be footed safely and add time.

Is Gutter Cleaning Worth Paying For?

The failure modes are what justify it. Overflowing gutters in NC cause:

  • Fascia and soffit rot, which is carpentry rather than cleaning and costs far more than any cleanout
  • Foundation water intrusion, because concentrated runoff at the drip line is exactly how water finds a crawlspace
  • Erosion channels in red clay, which are both unsightly and hard to re-establish turf on
  • Ice damming in the occasional hard NC winter, when a clogged trough holds water that freezes
  • Pest habitat, since standing debris is where mosquitoes and carpenter ants set up

Against a routine cleanout twice a year, avoiding any one of those pays for many years of cleaning.

How Can You Save Money

  • Bundle with a house wash. The ladders are already on site. Adding gutter brightening to a house washing booking is far cheaper than a standalone visit. Our house washing cost guide covers that side.
  • Get on a semi-annual schedule. Regular visits go faster, and it prevents the neglect surcharge.
  • Book the fall visit late. A cleaning in early October means you clean again after the oaks finish. Late November catches everything in one trip.
  • Clear landscaping under the gutter line before the visit, so ladders can be placed without shuffling.
  • Skip guards if you have pines. They are an expensive way to reduce, not remove, the problem. Against loblolly needles specifically, the return is poor.
  • Do not power wash the gutter faces yourself expecting the stripes to come off. They will not, and high pressure on aluminum can dent the gutter and force water behind the fascia.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does gutter cleaning cost for a two-story house?

It depends on linear footage, height, and how much debris has built up, and interior cleanout is priced separately, typically by gutter specialists, so get a written number. Steep pitch, complex rooflines, or three stories push it up. If the faces are striped, brightening runs $75 to $200.

How often should gutters be cleaned in NC?

Twice a year minimum for most Triangle homes, and three to four times a year with mature loblolly pines overhead. The standard once-a-year advice comes from regions without our combination of year-round pine drop and heavy spring pollen.

Is gutter cleaning included in pressure washing?

Not usually. They are separate services with separate pricing, though they bundle well because both need ladder access. Confirm which is in a quote rather than assuming, and see our pressure washing cost guide for how the wash itself prices.

Can gutters be pressure washed?

The inside of the trough can be flushed, but the exterior faces should not be pressure washed. High pressure dents aluminum, can force water behind the fascia board, and will not remove oxidation stripes anyway. Those require chemical brightening.

Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean again?

No. Good guards meaningfully extend the interval, but debris still accumulates on top, fine material still passes through, and the guards themselves need periodic clearing. Against pine needles the benefit is smallest, which is unfortunate given how common pines are here.

What are the black stripes on my gutters?

Oxidation, bonded with airborne grime and roof runoff, commonly called tiger striping. It is not removable by washing and requires a dedicated brightening treatment, typically $75 to $200 depending on linear footage. Our guide to gutter tiger stripes covers what causes them and why they come back.

Can I clean my own gutters?

Yes, on a single story with a stable ladder, gloves, and someone footing the ladder. The economics get worse on a two-story home, where the ladder work is genuinely the dangerous part. Falls from ladders during gutter cleaning cause serious injuries every year, and against the price of a professional visit the risk is not a good trade.

Two questions get you an accurate quote: how many stories, and roughly how many linear feet of gutter. A photo of the house from the front usually settles both.

We quote gutter brightening across Garner, Clayton, south Raleigh, and the surrounding towns, at $75 to $200 for most homes. Interior cleanout is priced separately, so ask for it as its own line. If the house itself needs attention, bundling with a soft wash is the cheaper way to do both.
